Named for the city of Orange in southeastern France in the department Vaucluse. In early times the city was called Aransio and was a well-known Roman colony. In 406 and in 410 the city was pillaged, and during the seventeenth century it suffered from religious wars. In spite of this, some Roman architecture remains, such as the triumphal arch and the old theater. (M 34353) _ _.
