D. Scott Birney (b. 1926) was a professor of astronomy at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, from 1968 to 1991, serving as department chair. He authored two textbooks: Modern Astronomy (1969) and Observational Astronomy (1991). The name was suggested by F. Vilas.
