Named in honor of the astronomer and mathematician Franz Xaver Freiherr von Zach (1754–1832). He was the director of the Seeberg Observatory near Gotha, Germany. Von Zach recovered planet  (1) Ceres profiting the Gauss computings because the planet was lost in consequence of Piazzi’s serious illness. He founded the journal Monatliche Correspondenz zur Beförderung der Erd- und Himmelskunde which was the main medium for exchange and improvements in observation and data treatment of the first asteroids.
