Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the third president of the United States (1801-1809), will be always remembered as the principal author of the 1776 Declaration of Independence. A man of the Enlightenment and of great intellectual power, he is also honored for the Virginian Statute for Religious Freedom (1779).
