Named in memory of Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788–1827), French physicist who constructed the so-called “Fresnel lens”, following an original idea by Buffon (1748) {see planet  (7420)} of dividing a lens surface into concentric rings. By studying the aberration of light, he removed a number of objections to the wave theory. (M 35493) _ _.
