János Irinyi (1817-1895) invented the “noiseless” match. An unsuccessful experiment in 1836 at the Vienna Polytechnikum gave him the idea that by replacing potassium chlorate with lead dioxide a non-explosive match can be created. After returning home he founded the first factories for such matches in Pest.
