Otto M. Burkard (b. 1908), professor emeritus of meteorology and geophysics of the University of Graz, was one of the founders of the Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The name was suggested by L. D. Schmadel, and the citation was prepared by H. Haupt.
