The Hambach Festival in 1832 was a great meeting of about 30~000 liberals and democrats, among them many members of a Burschenschaft. They demonstrated and asked firmly for a free and united Germany. The meeting place was the Maxburg castle above the Hambach village near Neustadt on the Weinstrasse.
