One of the oldest cities in the world, Lisbon was inhabited by pre-Celtic tribes during the Neolithic period. In 711 the city was taken by Berbers and Arabs from North Africa and the Middle East. Muslim influences are still visible in the Alfama district that survived the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
