Danish navigator and explorer Vitus Bering (1681-1741) worked in the service of the Russian navy. During the second Kamchatka Expedition (1733-1743) he reached the west coast of Alaska. On the way home his ship was stranded, and he and his crew had to spend the winter on a small, bare island, where many of them died.
