James Franck (1882-1964) and Gustav Hertz (1887-1975) received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1925. Both studied the excitation and ionization of atoms by electrons. The Franck-Hertz experiment provided support for Bohr's atomic model. The name was suggested by the first discoverer.
