Named in honor of Reginald Lawson Waterfield {1900–1986}, for many years a hemotologist at Guy’s Hospital in London and one of England’s best known amateur astronomers. He has been photographing comets since 1927 and still maintains an extensive program of astrometric observations. The minor planet also honors his cousin, William Francis Herschel Waterfield (1886–1933), a grandson of Sir John Herschel, a prolific observer of variable stars, a staff member of the Harvard Observatory during 1926–1928 and subsequently chief assistant at the Boyden Station.
