Named in memory of Homer E. Newell (1915–1983), one of the most important organizers of the U.S. space program. He was a member of the advisory committee that helped to establish the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and he became one of the original staff members when NASA came into being in 1958. Newell served in a number of leading positions and was Associate Administrator of NASA at the time of his retirement in 1973. (M 8151) _ _.
