Named in memory of Henrietta Hill Swope (1902–1980), best known for her work in establishing distance ratios for nearby galaxies. One of her most significant contributions was the calibration of the distance of the Andromeda galaxy. She worked as an assistant at the Harvard College Observatory during 1928–1942 and was on the staff of the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories during 1952–1968. She received the Annie J.
