Named in memory of Henrietta Hill Swope (1902–1980), best known for her work in establishing distance ratios for nearby galaxies. One of her most significant contributions was the calibration of the distance of the Andromeda galaxy. She worked as an assistant at the Harvard College Observatory during 1928–1942 and was on the staff of the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories during 1952–1968. She received the Annie J. Cannon {see planet  (1120)} prize of the American Astronomical Society in 1968 and an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Basel in 1975. The 1-m Swope telescope at the Las Campañas Observatory was named in her honor by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. (M 8798) _ _.
