Named in memory of J{oseph} Helffrich {1890–1971}, on the staff of the Heidelberg-Königstuhl Observatory between 1909 and 1911. As an assistant of Max Wolf {see planets  (827) and  (1217)}, he discovered 13 numbered minor planets. (M 18447) _ _.
