César-François Cassini (1714–1784), a.k.a. Cassini de Thury or Cassini III, succeeded his father, Jacques Cassini {see planet  (24102)}, in 1740 as third director of the Paris Observatory. He was also a cartographer and was instrumental in producing the first modern map of France using the triangulation method. (M 46684) _ _.
