Chiune Sugihara (1900–1986) was a Japanese consul-general stationed in Kaunas, Lithuania, during World War II. Putting his career and financial security at risk, in Aug. 1940 he defied his government’s order and issued transit visas that allowed 6000 Jews to seek safety in Japan and the former Soviet Union.
