German astronomer Carl Wilhelm Wirtz (1875-1939) worked at the Strasbourg and Kiel observatories. An untiring observer noted also for his orbit computations for comet D/1766 G1, he was the first, in 1924, to show statistically the existence of a redshift-distance relationship for spiral nebulae.
