Named in honor of Hermann F. Haupt {1926– }, director of the Institute for Astronomy, University of Graz. One of the pioneers of photometry of minor planets, he made photoelectric observations while working at the Lick Observatory in 1951 and 1952. He found the peculiar brightness distribution in the near infrared and the reddening with phase of Vesta. (M 9769) _ _.
