Named in honor of Shin-ichi Shimizu (1889– ), a pioneer in astrophotography among amateur astronomers in Japan, who in 1937, with only an 80-mm astrocamera, recovered periodic comet Daniel, which had been lost since its discovery apparition of 1909–1910.
