Named in honor of Peter MacKenzie Millman {1906–1990}, former head of Upper Atmosphere Research and, since his formal retirement, a guest scientist at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics of the National Research Council of Canada. Well known for his research on meteors and for his interest in meteorites, comets and planets, he has served as president of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and of the Meteoritical Society, as well as president of Commission 22 and chairman of the Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature of the IAU.
