Named after the small town of Naerum, some 15 km north of Copenhagen, where the discoverer spent his early years in the parental home. Archaeological finds from the stone age and bronze age tumuli bear witness to habitation during several millenia, as does the present name, which is derived from “Njarthar-heim”, i.e. the home of Njord, god of the sea and its riches in Norse mythology.
