Named in honor of Albert Francis Arthur Lofley Jones, New Zealand amateur astronomer renowned for the quantity and precision of his visual magnitude estimates of variable stars. His record of some 300,000 variable star observations over nearly 50 years is unrivaled worldwide. He is also a noted observer of comets and the discoverer of comet 1946 VI. He was an independent discoverer of supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. (M 13175) _ _.
