Named for a Siberian village, birthplace of the Russian ethnographers Ivan Evseevich Venyaminov (1797–1879) and Afanasij Prokopevich Shchapov (1831–1876). The former was the first explorer of the Aleutians and the latter a historian and popularizer of culture. (M 12014) _ _.
