Named in honor of Kaj Aa. Strand {1907–2000}, former Scientific Director of the U.S. Naval Observatory. Strand is known for his advances in the photographic astrometry of double stars. He was responsible for the construction and initial programs of the Naval Observatory’s 1.55-meter astrometric reflector and its associated semi-automatic measuring machine. These led to the determination of stellar trigonometric par?allaxes having an order-of-magnitude greater accuracy than heretofore possible, thus expanding the realm of the nearest stars.
