Named in honor of C. Michelle Olmstead for her enthusiastic assistance in the asteroid astrometry programs at Lowell Observatory and the U.S. Geological Survey. As a student at Northern Arizona University, Olmstead is a NASA undergraduate fellow, and she has participated in the observational, discovery, identification and astrometric stages of the asteroid survey work.
