Adolph Freiherr von Knigge (1752-1796) wrote novels, satires, dramas and autographic works, and he tranlated Italian and French authors into German. His best known work is Über den Umgang mit Menschen (1788; also known as Knigge), in which he offers a collection of maxims and precepts for a well-mannered life.
