Named in memory of Paul E. Klopsteg (1889–1991), who died on 1991 Apr. 28, a month before his 102nd birthday. He left Northwestern University in 1951 to become the National Science Foundation’s first assistant director for mathematical, physical and engineering sciences. He was appointed to the new position of associate director in 1952 and retired in 1958. His many honors include election as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1959, two medals and an award from three different archery organizations and membership in the Archery Hall of Fame. During his time at the National Science Foundation he played an important role in the planning for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the Kitt Peak National Observatory. (M 18305) _ _.
