Named in honor of Stephen James O’Meara. Well known for his fine drawings of solar system objects, O’Meara joined Sky and Telescope {see planet
(3243)} in 1979 and in 1989 was promoted to associate editor. His unique visual observations have included pre-Voyager sightings of spokes in Saturn’s B ring and a determination of Uranus’ rotation period. In January 1985 he made an apparent visual observation of P/Halley at magnitude 19.6 using a 0.6-m telescope on Mauna Kea. O’Meara’s writing and remarkable visual skill inspires other observers to improve the quality of their observations. An energetic speaker, he has taught introductory classes in astronomy in Massachusetts and Hawaii and is regularly sought for astronomy talks in the U.S. and abroad. (M 16245) _ _.
