Dave Brubeck (b. 1920), California-born pianist and composer, is best known for his remarkable experiments with jazz, particularly his use of 5/4 and other unusual time signatures in performances of his famous quartet during 1958-1967. He has also composed cantatas and has combined the sounds of jazz and a symphony orchestra.
