Named in honor of Elizabeth M. Bilson (b. 1937), administrative director of the Center for Radiophysics and Space Research (CRSR), Cornell University. Raised in Hungary, Bilson studied at the Sorbonne and obtained her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She was a research associate under Thomas Gold at the CRSR from 1969 to 1983, directing the Lunar Laboratory, and she has coauthored numerous articles related to the physical properties of lunar material, in particular explaining the reason for the low albedo of the moon.
