This Mars-crossing Phocaea {see planet  (25) for the prototype} is named in honor of the American amateur astronomer Don Parker, who specializes in high-resolution photography and CCD imaging of Mars and Jupiter. Through his precise imaging, new features have been recognized on Mars. His investigations of planetary atmospheres have improved the understanding of weather phenomena there. (M 23138) _ _.
