Named for the Minami-Oda district, inhabitants of which cooperated in establishing the observatory in 1971. Minami-Oda is located in the middle of Hyogo {see planet  (6879)} prefecture and has the biggest hydroelectric power plant in Japan. The district has made efforts to limit light pollution.
