Named in honor of Askol’d Anatol’evich Makarov (1925– ), an outstanding Russian choreographer and professor of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. From 1942 to 1970 he was the leading soloist at the Mariinskij Theatre, and since 1976 he has been artistic director at the St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theatre. (M 24918) _ _.
