Named in honor of Jeffery Warren (b. 1960), optical engineer at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University. Warren was responsible for the design, fabrication and operation of a major instrument on the NEAR spacecraft, the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIS). The NIS investigation represents the first-ever mapping of the surface of a minor planet from orbit. Name suggested and citation provided by J. Veverka.
