Named in honor of Archibald Edmiston Roy (1924– ), Scottish astrophysicist, teacher and writer. Although Roy has studied stellar interiors, neural networks, the history of astronomy, as well as psychical phenomena, he is best known as a celestial mechanician. He has worked on mean-motion commensurabilities, the restricted and general three-body problems, high-order Taylor series and the long-term stability of the solar system. While teaching in the Department of Astronomy, Glasgow University (a department he headed for five years), Roy had occasion to write four textbooks.
