Named in memory of Joseph Freiherr von Hammer-Purgstall (1774–1856) on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. As a profound orientalist, poet and historian, he was the founder and first president (1847–1849) of the (then Imperial) Academy of Sciences in Vienna. His most famous work is the ten-volume History of the Osman Empire. (M 30798) _ _.
