Named in honor of G. Edward Danielson (1939– ) of the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at California Institute of Technology. After working in industry in high-energy laser research, Danielson came to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech, where he has been involved since 1967 in the design, calibration, testing and data analysis of remote-sensing imagers. He has worked on numerous space missions, including Voyager, Pioneer Venus, Mariner Venus Mercury, the Hubble Space Telescope and Mars Observer. In 1982 Danielson was co-recoverer of comet 1P/Halley.
