Named for Antonio Canova (1757–1822), an Italian sculptor in the classicistic style. An opponent of the wild form of the baroque style, he worked in a realistic style with a quiet and smooth form. He made idealized portraits of Napoleon and his family. One of his most famous sculptures is ‘Amor and Psyche’. (M 26765) _ _.
