Named in honor of Hiroshi Karoji (1946– ), a professor at the Japanese National Astronomical Observatory and one of the leading astronomers in the team to construct the 8-meter Subaru telescope at Mauna Kea. He spent more than ten years at the Institut d’Astrophysique in Paris before joining the Subaru team. His main interests are the redshift distribution of galaxies and activity in infrared galaxies.
