Named in honor of Masanori Iye (1949– ), a professor at the National Astronomical Observatory who works mainly on structure and evolution of galaxies and executive secretary of the Japanese National Committee of Astronomy since 1994. As project scientist for Subaru, he led the engineering core team to design and manufacture the 8.2-m telescope, and he also led teams to develop a CCD camera, active and adaptive optics, as well as a faint-object spectrograph.
