Named for the French impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840–1926). He became acquainted with the navy painter Eugéne Boudin, who encouraged him to paint directly in natural surroundings, rather than to make a sketch in the open air and to paint it later in the studio. Monet, Manet and the other impressionist painters influenced each other strongly. (M 26932) _ _.
