Named in memory of Mary Cassatt (1845–1927), American impressionistic painter, who studied in Italy, Spain, Holland and especially France. She and Degas {see planet  (6673)} became great friends and influenced each other. The Japanese print makers, whose work became known during her lifetime, also made an impression on her.
