German-Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786) was known for his ideas on Haskala (Jewish Enlightenment). In 1754 he met G. E. Lessing, who took him as the prototype of Nathan der Weise. Mendelssohn's Philosophische Gespräche were published anonymously by Lessing in 1755.
