Named in memory of Aldo Kranjc (1919–1994), Italian astronomer at the observatories in Naples, Milan and Bologna. He succeeded F. Zagar {see planet  (6746)} as director of Brera-Merate Observatory in 1971. His many activities and studies included general relativity and applications of electronic techniques to astronomy and spectroscopy. He was a pioneer in Italy on numerical electronic calculus.
