The city of Delémont is the capital of Jura, situated 50 km southwest of Basel. In 1289 the bishop of Basel, Pierre Reich of Rechenstein, gave it the status of a city. In the middle of the nineteenth century, the valley of Delémont was the Swiss industrial center for iron and steel with about two thousand workers.
