Named in memory of Ulrich Zwingli (1484–1531), Swiss reformer of the church. He was originally a Catholic priest, but under the influence of the books of Erasmus and Luther {see, respectively, planets  (7907) and  (7100)} he felt the need for reform. In 1523 he broke with the bishop, married and became a fervent puritan. For him the holy communion was only a symbolic celebration, and in this respect he did not agree with Luther. Zwingli died in a fight against the catholic cantons as a clergyman of the reformed soldiers. (M 33387) _ _.
