Arne Ardeberg (b. 1940), professor emeritus of astronomy at Lund Observatory, was director of the European Southern Observatory at La Silla between 1979 and 1984. He played a very important role in the development of future extremely large telescopes with primary mirrors of aperture 30-50 meters.
