Conrad Gesner (1516-1565) was a versatile Swiss scientist well-known for his research on animals and plants. Between 1551 and 1558 his monumental Historia animalium, which distinguished facts from myths, was published. A similar survey of plant life (1500 wood engravings of plants, seeds and flowers) was never completed.
