Named in honor of John L. Remo (1941– ), U.S. physicist who has contributed to laser resonator optics, quantum optics instrumentation, energy systems and materials interactions. He has also helped promote an international interest in policy toward the detction of earth-threatening minor planets and comets and their mitigation, notably with his organization of a conference on the subject at the United Nations {see planet  (6000)} in New York in 1995 and publication of the proceedings.
